Eagles is a visual poem filmed in a Kansas City cemetery, where Jeanne Eagels (1890–1929), an actress of the stage and early cinema, is buried. Born Jeanne Eagles, she later altered the spelling of her surname, leaving a subtle slippage between a woman's name and the name of a bird.
Decades after her death, her life was fictionalized in the 1957 Hollywood biopic Jeanne Eagels, starring Kim Novak. A fragment of Novak's voice from the film drifts through the cemetery, momentarily giving voice to someone who is no longer there.
